THE STRONGEST WEAVE

Day 8 · Week 2 begins
Plain Weave Explained
Over one, under one, over one, under one.
The Idea
Plain weave is one warp over, one weft under, repeated forever. Of all the weaves on a loom, plain weave is the simplest — and the strongest. Each weft thread goes over one warp, under one warp, alternating every pick. Because every yarn is locked at every crossing, the cloth doesn't slip, doesn't snag easily, and breathes evenly. That's why mulmul, voile, muslin, organza, and chanderi are all plain-woven.
Quick test: look at the cloth in good light. If the warp and weft form a clean checkerboard pattern at the yarn level — over, under, over, under — it's a plain weave.

How to explain it

When she asks "is this plain cotton?"
She's noticed the weave. Don't call it boring — call it the foundation. Name what she's actually holding.
"This is mulmul, ma'am — a plain weave in 120s yarn. Plain weave is the strongest weave on the loom, and when it's woven with the finest yarn, you get this kind of cloth — almost weightless, but it lasts decades. Saree-shop owners pass mulmul down to daughters."
🎯
Today's anchor: Plain weave is over one, under one — the simplest and strongest weave on the loom. Mulmul, voile, muslin, organza, chanderi are all plain-woven. Change the yarn count, the cloth changes completely. Week 2 begins here — the loom takes over from the wheel.
Day 8 Quiz · 3 Questions

Answer to mark your attendance

Week 2 starts now. Get all three right and you stay in the running for the top-3 craft gift.

Which of these cloths is NOT a plain weave?
A
Mulmul
B
Voile
C

A
It uses gold thread in every metre
B
Every weft locks under every warp — so no yarn can slip
C
It is always made on a powerloom
D
It is dyed in two layers
Question 3
A customer asks "why is this featherlight mulmul so expensive when it looks plain?" — your honest answer:

C
"Because it has gold thread inside."
D
"Because we imported it."
