Why the same loom can make rough denim and glossy satin

THREE WEAVES, THREE FEELS

Day 9 · Week 2
Twill, Satin & Sateen
The thread skips — and the cloth changes character.
The Idea
After plain weave, the thread starts to skip. In plain weave the thread goes over one, under one. In twill, satin, and sateen, the thread skips over several threads before going under — and where it skips decides the feel. Twill skips in a steady diagonal — that slanting line you see on denim and gabardine. It is tough and hides creases. Satin lets the thread float on top in long skips, so light bounces off a smooth surface — that is the shine on a silk Banarasi border. Sateen is the same float trick, but in cotton — soft, with a quiet sheen.
Quick test: look for the line. A diagonal line running across the cloth means twill. A smooth, glossy surface with no visible line means satin or sateen.
The depth ladder

How much the thread floats

Same loom — change how far the thread skips, and the surface changes completely.

Four weaves you already know by feel

Same loom on each — the thread path changes, and the cloth feels like a different fabric.

Recap
In a customer DM

How to explain it

When she asks "why does this dupatta shine so much?"
She has noticed the surface. Tell her the shine is woven in, not painted on — that is what makes it last.
"That shine is the weave, ma'am — not a coating. It is a satin weave: the silk threads float on top in long skips, so light slides across instead of catching. That is why a satin-border Banarasi stands out across a room. Because it is woven in, the shine does not wash off."
🎯
Today's anchor: Plain is over one, under one. Twill is a diagonal skip — denim. Satin is a long float in silk — high shine. Sateen is the same float in cotton — soft sheen. The skip makes the surface.
