Resist-dot tie-dye

WEEK 2 · CRAFT TECHNIQUES

Bandhani — A Thousand
Dots, All Tied by Hand

Fingernail-tight knots resist the dye. Open the cloth, the dots stay white. The proof is in the spread.

The Concept
Bandhani = tie tiny knots, then dye, then open Bandhani — from the Sanskrit "bandh" meaning "to tie" — is the world's oldest known tie-dye. The cloth is pinched into hundreds or thousands of tiny points and each point is tied off with thread, by hand, using fingernails. The cloth is dyed; the tied portions stay the original colour. Tighter ties = sharper white dots. The number, spacing, and shape of dots is what separates a daily-wear chunari from a wedding gharchola.
Tie · Dye · Open
= Bandhani
Real bandhani — when you open the cloth, the dots are slightly uneven. Machine print is identical.

How to Use This in Your Store

Your Brand Edge
Bandhani customers ask one question — "yeh tie-dye original hai ya print?" Spread the cloth flat and point: the dots are slightly oval, not perfect circles. The fabric is crinkled where it was tied. Stretch a small section — the dots warp with the cloth because they're part of it. Print stays flat and identical. Then tell her: every dot was tied by hand, sometimes by little girls' fingertips because they're small enough. The MRP makes sense.
"Dekhiye, isme ek-ek dot oval hai, perfect round nahi. Aur dekhiye yahan crinkles — ye tied hone ke marks hain. Print mein dot perfect circle hota, fabric flat hota. Yeh real Kutch bandhani hai — Khatri community has been doing this for 5,000 years."
💡
Remember this always: Bandhani is hand-tied resist tie-dye. Every dot, by hand. Real bandhani crinkles where it was tied, dots are slightly oval, and stretching the cloth distorts the dots because the pattern is the cloth — not on it.
