The Concept
Bandhani = tie tiny knots, then dye, then open
Bandhani — from the Sanskrit "bandh" meaning "to tie" — is the world's oldest known tie-dye. The cloth is pinched into hundreds or thousands of tiny points and each point is tied off with thread, by hand, using fingernails. The cloth is dyed; the tied portions stay the original colour. Tighter ties = sharper white dots. The number, spacing, and shape of dots is what separates a daily-wear chunari from a wedding gharchola.
