WEEK 3 ยท REGIONAL MASTERY

Chanderi & Maheshwari
MP’s Sheer Weaves

Two Madhya Pradesh traditions, both transparent. Chanderi buttis on a silk-cotton ground. Maheshwari with a reversible body.

The Concept
Two MP weaves: Chanderi (sheer with buttis) + Maheshwari (reversible body, striped border) Chanderi is woven in Chanderi town in north Madhya Pradesh — a sheer, almost see-through fabric made on a pit-loom. Traditionally silk warp + cotton weft (pure-silk versions also exist), with small dotted ‘buttis’ woven in zari or thread. Maheshwari comes from Maheshwar on the Narmada river — also sheer, but its signature is a reversible body (looks the same on front and back) and a distinctive striped pallu with a temple-edge border. Both are lightweight, summer-friendly, and GI-tagged. Used by women across India for everyday-festive and office wear.

How to Use This in Your Store

Your Brand Edge
When a customer compares a Chanderi-style sari at one price and a real one at another, hold both up to the light. Real Chanderi is see-through — you can see the weave grid. Then touch the buttis (the small dotted motifs). On a real one, they are woven into the cloth, soft to touch, slightly raised. On a print, they sit flat on the surface and feel like paint. For Maheshwari, flip the sari over — if the back looks exactly the same as the front, that is the real reversible weave.
"Behen ji, light ke saamne dekho — you can see through it. Real Chanderi is sheer, that’s its identity. Aur ye chhoti buttis — touch karo — woven hain, paint nahi. Real silk-cotton Chanderi, MP ka, GI-tagged. Maheshwari mein palat ke dekho — both sides exactly same, that’s the reversible weave."
๐Ÿ’ก
Remember this always: Chanderi and Maheshwari are MP’s two sheer-weave traditions. Chanderi is silk-cotton (or pure silk) with woven butti motifs. Maheshwari is reversible body + striped pallu + temple-edge border. Both GI-tagged. Both summer-friendly.
