GI Tags Explained — Craft, Protected by Law
Geographical Indication tags are legal seals of origin. They say: only craft made in this region by these communities can carry this name. Here’s the textile GI list.
The Concept
GI = Geographical Indication. A legal tag that protects craft tied to a region.
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a legal protection given under Indian law (GI Act, 1999) for products with a specific geographical origin and qualities tied to that origin. Only products genuinely made in the protected region by registered producers can use the GI name. Banarasi sarees, Kanjivaram silk, Pochampally Ikat, Pashmina shawls, Madhubani paintings — all GI-tagged. When you sell something with a GI name, the customer is buying both the craft AND the legal certification that it’s from where it claims. India has 400+ GI tags across crafts. The textile and handicraft ones matter most for fashion brand owners.

How to Use This in Your Store
Your Brand Edge
When a customer asks why a Banarasi or Kanjivaram costs more than a similar-looking saree, the GI tag is your strongest line. Don’t just say ‘original’ — say ‘GI-tagged’. That single phrase carries legal weight. The government protects it. The karigars in that region are the only ones allowed to make it. The MRP includes that protection — that’s why it’s not the same as the ‘Banarasi-style’ saree in the next shop.
“Madam ye Banarasi GI-tagged hai. Matlab Government of India ne legally protect kiya hai — sirf Varanasi ke registered weavers hi is naam se bech sakte hain. Jo ‘Banarasi-style’ bolte hain woh actually Surat ka powerloom hota hai. Difference yahi hai — aur MRP mein woh protection bhi included hai.”
π‘
Remember this always: A GI tag is a legal seal of origin. Only producers in the protected region can use the name. Banarasi, Kanjivaram, Pochampally, Pashmina, Chanderi, Madhubani — the most important fashion GIs to know. The phrase ‘GI-tagged’ carries weight in any customer conversation.
