WEEK 3 · REGIONAL MASTERY
Kanjivaram — Kanchipuram’s Three-Shuttle Silk
Pure mulberry silk + real zari + a 3-shuttle korvai loom. The three signatures of a real one.
The Concept
Kanjivaram = pure mulberry silk + real zari, woven in Kanchipuram
A Kanjivaram (also spelled Kanchipuram) sari is woven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. The body, border, and pallu are woven on three separate shuttles and then interlocked — the border colour is always different from the body, joined by a hand-interlocked korvai weave, not stitched. The yarn is pure mulberry silk; the zari is silver wire dipped in gold. A real Kanjivaram weighs 450g to 1kg+ because of the silk and the metal in the zari. Each piece takes 10 days to 3 weeks to weave. The three real markers: 3-shuttle korvai (border is different colour from body, hand-joined), real silver-gold zari (passes the burn test), and pure mulberry silk (does not stretch when pulled).
Mulberry Silk + Real Zari + 3-Shuttle Korvai
= Kanjivaram

How to Use This in Your Store
Your Brand Edge
When a customer compares a real Kanjivaram with a ‘Kanjivaram-style’ piece, point to the border first. On a real one, the border colour is different from the body and joined by hand — you can run your finger along the seam and feel a tiny ridge where the two colours interlock. That’s korvai. Then tell her the weight: 600 grams of pure silk and real silver-gold zari, woven over 2 weeks on a pit-loom by one weaver family. That is why this sari costs what it costs.
"Aunty, dekhiye border — the red and the body colour are not the same, and there’s no stitch line. That’s the 3-shuttle korvai weave — only real Kanjivaram has it. Aur uthake dekho — the silk and the silver-gold zari together make it heavy. 600 grams. 2 weeks weaving. Yeh real Kanchipuram silk hai, GI-tagged."
💡
Remember this always: A real Kanjivaram is pure mulberry silk + real silver-gold zari, woven in Kanchipuram on a 3-shuttle korvai loom. The border is always a different colour from the body, hand-joined — never stitched. Weighs 450g to 1kg+. GI-tagged since 2005.
