WEEK 3 Β· REGIONAL MASTERY
Kundan & Meenakari Heritage Jewellery Duo
Uncut stones pressed in pure-gold foil (Kundan) + enamel painted on the back (Meenakari). The Mughal-Rajasthan tradition.
The Concept
Kundan = stone setting in pure-gold foil. Meenakari = enamel painted on metal.
Kundan and Meenakari are two separate jewellery crafts that almost always travel together in real heritage pieces. Kundan is a setting technique: uncut polki stones are placed in shaped recesses, and pure 24-karat gold foil is pressed in by hand until the foil grips the stone — no claws, no glue, no prongs. Meenakari is an enamel craft: powdered coloured glass is fused at high heat onto gold or silver to create painted patterns. In traditional polki jewellery, Kundan covers the front and Meenakari decorates the reverse — so the piece is beautiful on both sides. Jaipur is the world capital of both crafts. Real Kundan-Meenakari is made by hand by karigars over weeks; machine-set imitations cost a fraction but have none of the lustre, no enamel reverse, and no weight.
Polki + 24k Gold Foil + Enamel Back
= Kundan-Meenakari
Jaipur is the centre. Skill passed down karigar families.

Your Brand Edge
When a customer asks why a heritage polki necklace costs more than a Kundan-style one online, do two things. First, flip it over and show her the back. Real Kundan-Meenakari has hand-painted enamel on the reverse — tiny flowers, peacocks, leaves in red, green, white. The imitation has a plain metal back. Second, point at how the stone sits — no claws or prongs holding it, just pure gold foil pressed around it by hand. That technique is 400 years old and only Jaipur karigars do it well. That is what the price is paying for.
"Madam, palat ke dekhiye — back side pe Meenakari hai, hand-painted enamel. That is the real heirloom mark. Aur stone ko dekho — no claws, no prongs, just gold foil pressed around it — 400-year-old technique, Jaipur ki. Karigar ne 3 weeks lagaye hain. That’s why the MRP is what it is."
π‘
Remember this always: Kundan and Meenakari are two separate crafts that travel together in real heritage jewellery. Kundan = uncut stones set in pure-gold foil, no claws. Meenakari = hand-painted enamel on metal, usually on the reverse. Jaipur is the centre. A plain metal back means it’s not real heritage polki.
