Pochampally Ikat — The Yarn-First Pattern
Yarn is tied, dyed, then woven — the pattern is built before the cloth exists. Bhoodan Pochampally, Telangana.
The Concept
Pochampally Ikat = yarn tied + dyed first, then woven
Pochampally Ikat is woven in Bhoodan Pochampally and nearby villages in Telangana. The technique is resist tie-dye, but applied to the yarn before weaving — not the finished cloth. The weaver maps a pattern, ties tight bunches of yarn at exact intervals, dyes the yarn, unties it, and only then sets it on the loom. As the loom weaves, the pattern appears. Because dye bleeds slightly under the ties, ikat motifs have characteristic soft, blurred edges — that is the real tell. Single ikat = only the warp (or only the weft) is dyed in pattern. Double ikat = both warp and weft are pre-patterned, and they have to line up exactly on the loom — rare, expensive, weeks of work per metre.

Your Brand Edge
When a customer compares a Pochampally Ikat with a printed ikat-style sari, ask her to look at any motif edge from up close. On a real ikat, the edges are soft and slightly blurred — that’s the dye bleeding around the ties when the yarn was dyed. A print has sharp edges because it sits on top of the cloth. Then flip the sari over — on a real ikat the pattern is just as visible on the back as on the front, because the dye is in the yarn itself, not on the surface.
"Madam, motif ke edge dekho — thoda blur hai na? That’s the proof — in ikat, yarn ko pehle dye karte hain, phir weave. Dye thoda bleed karta hai under the ties, that’s why edges are soft. Print mein edges sharp hote hain. Aur palat ke dekho — back side pe bhi same pattern. Real Pochampally, Telangana ka, GI-tagged."
๐ก
Remember this always: Pochampally Ikat is yarn tied + dyed before weaving. Soft blurred motif edges are the real tell — sharp edges mean it’s a print. Single ikat = one direction. Double ikat = both warp and weft pre-patterned, rare and heirloom-grade. GI-tagged since 2005.
